From the moment we choose a stone to the final polish of the setting, light plays a central role in every decision. Whether it’s the soft warmth of early morning sun or the moody glow of candlelight, we think about how a ring will come alive in the world outside the studio - on your hand, in real life.
Stone First, Always
Every stone behaves differently depending on the light. Salt and pepper diamonds, for example, reveal their unique speckled character best in diffused daylight, while a lab-grown brilliant cut diamond might dazzle brightest under evening lights. We hand-select each centrepiece based on how it plays with natural and ambient light - not just how it looks in a box.
Sapphires are another perfect example. Many of our clients are surprised at how a teal or green sapphire can shift tones throughout the day. In direct sunlight, they can flash blue or silver; in shade, they deepen and soften. We love leaning into that fluidity - it gives each piece its own quiet personality.
Designing for Daylight and Beyond
Once the stone is chosen, we consider how the setting can help it shine - literally. A high-set solitaire might catch every sunbeam, while a bezel setting offers a softer, glow-from-within feel. Even the angle of the claws can change how light enters a stone.
Metal choice also makes a difference. Platinum tends to cool the light, creating a crisp, modern look. Yellow gold adds warmth and can soften the edges of sparkle - perfect for vintage-style designs or stones with more fire than brilliance.
